We have received a number of calls recently from consumers who have been requested to leave deposits on their pre-arranged funeral that were previously not paid, or were pressured to leave a deposit when making an inquiry.

Response
Regrettably, with more and more consumers opting to pre-arrange and pre-pay their funeral wishes, there are more and more "schemes" being thrust on consumers. The deposit is a way for the sales person to reap their commission and adds little or no value to the pre-arranged funeral plan it's self.

What can you do?
Do not leave deposits with anyone; tell them if you decide to pre pay then you will take care of it then. If you feel pressured in anyway the purchase your making is probably not in your best interest. Commissions often cloud a sales person's sense of obligation to provide good choices and options for those they are suppose to be serving.

Advice
The best advice we can give you is to become informed and choose your funeral home carefully.

In today's society, funeral homes can no longer expect that families will choose their firm because they went to the same school as the owner, they are in the same Rotary Club or their family has used the firm for years. Honesty and trust are being demanded as more and more families are learning about their real choices. In the end, value, integrity and fairness wins loyalty - not " slick" marketing schemes.

What if we have already signed on with this type of pre-payment marketing?

Not to worry.

In Ontario all pre-paid funeral plans can be transferred or cancelled.  First contact a Funeral Home in your area that your sure is giving you honest advice.  Tell them what you have pre-paid and with whom, they will give you advice on transferring or canceling your pre-paid funeral

If transferring from another funeral home, in most cases you will receive a higher level of service and merchandise selection and, depending on status of the pre-payment, often there is hundreds, even thousands of dollars more in your original pre-paid trust than what we would be charging for the same merchandise and more service.

A New World of Choice
Families First Funeral Home & Tribute Centre is helping to vet the market place and introducing families to a new breed of funeral homes that care as much about consumers as they do the families they serve. When this happens, the benefits to all involved  become refreshingly clear. Those firms that are exposed in the process often watch the rapid erosion of the loyalty they once counted on.
